In this meditation we contemplate that, just as a wave is one with the ocean from which it surfaces, we are one with the universe from which we emerge. Therefore, we need only investigate our self to know what the universe essentially is. We consider the possibility that everything we know of the world, such as sights, sounds, textures, tastes and smells, is a temporary appearance, which accounts for the apparent separation between our self and the world. With this understanding, we feel that the world and its objects share the same being that we know and love as our self. When we recognise only appearances, we like some and dislike others. If we see through the appearances to reality itself, we love all equally.
