The Japanese indiginous religion “Shintoism” is polyethism and it believes that everything around us has souls and gods in them.
But did you know that we say: “A single rice grain has 7 gods in them?”
They are the gods of “earth, wind, insects (that eat pests), clouds, sun, and the farmers.” These are all elements that are essential for creating rice, and it was an idea to teach children to be grateful for these gods
and the food we eat and to not waste them. You would especially be strictly scolded if you wasted rice because it is our staple food from ancient times.
I think it’s interesting that the “farmers” are included in the 7 gods too. The kanji character 米 is written by combing 八 (eight), 十 (ten), 八 (ten) the number 88, and this represented the number of steps involved in the production of rice. Farmers, who overcame hard work to provide rice to the people, were appreciated as much as the gods of nature.
