It is apparent that the electrostatic force is extremely strong, compared to gravity. In fact, the electrostatic force is the basic force governing phenomena in daily life-the tension in a string, the normal forces between surfaces, friction, chemical reactions, etc. - except weight. Why then did it take so long for scientists to understand this force? Newton came up with his gravitational law long before electricity was even crudely understood.
