Street Fighter games have become known for having a stand out mechanic that, along with a handful of other important aspects, helps to define them from one another and give them their unique identities.

Though it hasn't been announced yet, we have a sneaking suspicion that Street Fighter 6 isn't all that far off, and so some speculation about the kinds of mechanics that would make it a strong title feels apt right now.

It's extremely easy to get ahead of ourselves when talking and speculating about the particulars of a still hypothetical game simply because we know next to nothing about all of its other relevant facets, (everything from average walk speed to the way Super meters might be filled) and so it's appears to be more worthwhile to consider first where we might want players' attention and focus to go, and then consider a mechanic that would help achieve that goal.


We've come to know Street Fighter as footsie-centric fighting game, and thus helping newcomers appreciate the rewards of strong footsie play (specifically whiff punishing) could potentially make for an experience that sets them off on the right path from the start.


Street Fighter 5, for example, set its early players off on a path that told them to practice being on offense as much as humanly possible, and this made for a less than stellar first few years for casuals and competitors alike.

In our first podcast segment this week, we discuss some of the particulars surrounding fighting game mechanics and I offer my thoughts on what one that achieves the above goals might look like.
