Russia's Uran-9 and Nerekhta combat robots took part in drills amid regular troop formations for the first time during joint Belarus-Russia Zapad-2021 strategic military exercises, as shown in footage released by the Defense Ministry on Monday.
Footage shows drills testing the Uran-9 and Nerekhta combat robots at the Mulino proving ground in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region, as well as at the Kuzminsky training ground in the country's Rostov Region.
The Uran-9, a tracked unmanned combat ground vehicle (UCGV) designed for fire support, reconnaissance, and anti-tank missions, is manufactured by Kalashnikov Concern. The UCGV can be equipped with an Ataka anti-tank guided missile launcher, 7.62-mm machine gun, Shmel-M rocket-assisted flamethrower, and a 30-mm 2A42 auto-cannon. Footage shows the Uran-9 participating in combat action, including destroying enemy armoured vehicles from a distance of 3,000 to 5,000 metres.
The Nerekhta, designed for use in artillery reconnaissance, combat, and transport, was developed by Russia's V.A.Degtyarev Plant in collaboration with the Foundation for Advanced Research Projects. The combat robot can be equipped with a 30-mm AG-30M grenade launcher and a 12.7-mm Kord machine gun. Footage shows the Nerekhta providing fire support to defending units during the drills, as they advanced in combat action.
The strategic Russia-Belarus military exercises "Zapad-2021" are underway over the 10th to the 16th of September at nine training grounds across both countries. The drills will see over 800 pieces of military equipment put through their paces, such as the Uran-9 and Nerekhta combat robots.
Around 200,000 individuals, including some 2,000 service members from member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and other friendly nations, will participate in the 2021 strategic exercises.
