HOW IT ALL BEGAN @KC9YL
My friend Mike KE8IL gets all the credit. In February 2011, his amateur radio repeater club was streaming live audio of ham radio volunteers' TX, as they were manning the race checkpoints of the UP-200 sled dog race in Marquette, Michigan.
The next day, I was chatting with Mike, who suggested that I would enjoy amateur radio. The following day I checked out a copy of "Now You're Talking" and read about 9-year-olds getting their license, being able to talk to the International Space station and bouncing signals off the moon. I was HOOKED!
I attended our local ARES/RACES club meetings as an observer for a few months, until I passed my Technician exam. I bought a "starter" dual band HT, and had to walk about a mile up the road (higher elevation) to participate in the local weekly nets. At our club's Field Day in June 2011, I got my first taste of HF........ HOOKED again!
After a few months of studying, and a 2-day General class/test session in Wausau in October 2011, I got my upgrade! My goal of reaching Amateur Extra was reached on July 16, 2013, and received my VE credentials in October 2013. I also QSO'd my 50th state in October (thanks, KL!)
I enjoy learning new modes and expanding my amateur radio horizons. I enjoy adding to my QSL card/certificate collection and enjoy contesting, as well. I have attended the past 6 W9DXCC conventions in Illinois and my first trip to Dayton/Xenia HamVention in 2018 has become an annual event.
